excerpts
from
secretary
of state madeleine k. albright
on
international economic leadership
"We
will also fuel an expanding global economy that is creating new
opportunities for people on every continent. And we will
give more countries a stake in the international system . . . and the
message we must all do our best to get across is that movement towards a
more integrated global economy is not a choice or an option; it is a
fact of life. Integration is fueled by technology which is driven
by knowledge which has no reverse gear.
We can also work towards
agreements to open up whole new sectors of the global economy . . .
opening the world economy is not an
end, but a means. Our purpose is not simply to increase the volume of
global commerce, it is to improve the quality of peoples' lives. The
evidence is clear, however, that globalization is not lowering standards
around the world; it is raising them."
